Quick answers

What toys survive Lab jaws?

No toy is truly indestructible. Start with tough rubber such as KONG Extreme or West Paw Zogoflex, and supervise hard nylon. Use the AAHA thumbnail test: if you cannot dent the surface with your thumbnail, it may be too hard for your Lab’s teeth. Answer page →

Labs were bred to carry things in their mouths, and many never grow out of chewing. The right toys protect furniture and reduce boredom. The wrong ones become an expensive foreign-body surgery. This guide focuses on interactive and fetch toys for chocolate Labs; for long-lasting edible and nylon chews, see best chews and bones for Labs.

How we picked

We prioritized toys brands market for power chewers and large dogs, with a clear size for Lab jaws (roughly 55–80 lb adults), and we skipped anything marketed as “indestructible.” No prices or star ratings are listed here — those change daily on Amazon.

Stuffable and rubber toys

KONG Extreme (Large) and X-Large

KONG’s black Extreme rubber is the brand’s toughest classic formula and is widely recommended for determined chewers. Stuff with kibble, wet food or a smear of peanut butter, freeze overnight, and you have 20–40 minutes of quiet crate time. Most adult Labs fit Large; very big males and gulpers do better on X-Large so the toy cannot be swallowed. Follow KONG’s sizing chart and retire the toy if it cracks.

West Paw Zogoflex Tux (Large)

Tux is a treat-dispensing Zogoflex toy that floats, so it doubles as a water-retrieve. West Paw states Zogoflex toys are made in the USA, dishwasher-safe, and covered by a one-time replacement guarantee if a dog destroys them. Use it supervised: once the opening is chewed open enough to swallow pieces, stop.

West Paw Zogoflex Hurley (Large)

Hurley is a floating bone-shaped toy. Because the material flexes, it is more likely to pass the AAHA thumbnail test than hard nylon — press your thumbnail into it; if you can leave a mark, it is soft enough for many dogs. Still not for unsupervised power chewers.

Fetch and outdoor toys

Chuckit! Ultra Grip Launcher with Ultra Ball Large (3”)

Labs will retrieve until their paws fall off. A launcher lets you throw farther without bending for a slobbery ball. For Labs in the 60–100 lb range, Chuckit! recommends the Large (3-inch) Ultra Ball, which floats. Ultra Balls are fetch toys, not chew toys — take them away when the session ends so your Lab does not shred the rubber.

Jolly Pets Tug-n-Toss (8”)

A heavy-duty ball with a handle for tug or herding-style play. The 8-inch size is hard for an adult Lab to gulp whole. It floats and, per Jolly Pets, stays inflated even if punctured. Good for yard and pool days; not a quiet indoor chew.

Extreme chewers and mental work

Goughnuts MAXX ring

Built for the Labs that destroy everything else. Goughnuts sizes MAXX rings for dogs roughly 60 lb and up and embeds a red safety core: when you see red, the toy is worn through and should be replaced. Supervise every session. Even “heavy duty” rubber fails eventually.

Nina Ottosson Dog Twister

A Level 3 treat puzzle from Outward Hound / Nina Ottosson. It is for mental enrichment, not chewing — sit with your Lab while they work the sliding blocks. Pair puzzles with short training sessions and daily exercise targets so toys are not the only outlet.

Toy safety for Lab jaws

  1. Size up. If the toy fits entirely behind the back teeth, it is too small.
  2. Thumbnail test. Per AAHA, if you cannot indent the surface with your thumbnail, the item is too hard and can fracture teeth. Prefer flexible rubber for unsupervised downtime; hard nylon only when you are watching.
  3. No cooked bones, ever. Cooking makes bones brittle; they splinter and can perforate the gut (PetMD).
  4. Supervise and retire. Toss toys with cracks, missing chunks, or a visible safety core.
  5. Count calories. Stuffable toys and edible chews add to the day’s intake — adjust meals with the calorie calculator.

New puppies need an age-appropriate starter kit in the puppy checklist. Pair toys with a correctly sized crate and a front-clip harness for walks. For long-lasting chews and bones (Benebone, Nylabone, Greenies, yak chews, bully sticks), continue to best chews and bones for Labs.

Frequently asked questions

What size KONG for a Lab?

Most adult Labs need Large or X-Large. Pick a size the dog cannot fit entirely behind the back teeth, and follow KONG's chart.

Are tennis balls safe for Labs?

Supervised fetch is usually fine, but Labs can shred felt and swallow pieces. Prefer a rubber Ultra Ball sized for large dogs, and retire damaged balls.

Is any dog toy indestructible?

No. Makers and vets agree: every toy can fail under a strong Lab. Supervise, inspect, and replace when torn or when a red safety core shows.
