Quick answers

How to stop a Lab puppy from biting?

Redirect mouthing onto a puppy-safe chew and calmly end play when teeth touch skin. Soft rubber toys such as a KONG Puppy soothe sore gums. Avoid hard chews that fail the AAHA thumbnail test, supervise every session, and never use physical punishment. Answer page →

Are cooked bones safe for Labs?

No. Cooking makes bones brittle so they splinter, risking choking, broken teeth and gut perforation. PetMD and other veterinary sources advise against cooked bones entirely. Offer correctly sized rubber toys or approved edible chews instead, and supervise every chewing session. Answer page →

Chocolate Labs are famous for destroying “indestructible” chews. This guide covers nylon, rubber and edible chews sized for adult Labs. For fetch toys, tug balls and puzzles, see best toys for chocolate Labs. We do not list prices or star ratings.

Safety rules before you buy

  1. No cooked bones. Brittle fragments can choke or perforate the intestine (PetMD).
  2. Thumbnail test. Per AAHA, if your thumbnail cannot indent the surface, the chew is too hard for teeth.
  3. Size for Lab jaws. Choose Large / X-Large / Giant / Souper sizes meant for 50–100+ lb dogs. A Medium “Power Chew” is still a choking risk for a Lab.
  4. Supervise. Take away pieces small enough to swallow. With edible chews, remove the last stub or use a holder.
  5. Skip most rawhide. Strong chewers can gulp large chunks that obstruct the gut; the AKC summarizes the risks.
  6. Calories count. Edible chews are food. Adjust meals with the Lab calorie calculator and feeding chart so chews do not tip your Lab into obesity.

Nylon chews

Benebone Wishbone (Large, bacon)

A curved nylon chew infused with real bacon flavor (per Benebone). Large is sized for dogs under about 90 lb on Benebone’s chart; Giant exists for bigger dogs. Nylon is harder than rubber — use the thumbnail test and watch for sharp edges as it wears. Benebone states products are made and sourced in the USA.

Benebone Dental Chew (Large)

Ridged nylon meant to scrape as the dog chews. Same sizing and supervision rules as the Wishbone. Rotate shapes so your Lab does not fixate on one worn spot.

Nylabone Power Chew Axis Bone (X-Large / Souper)

Nylabone’s Power Chew line uses its toughest material for aggressive chewers. The Axis Bone has three textured ends; X-Large / Souper is labeled for dogs over 50 lb, which matches most Labs. Replace when ends are chewed to a stub. Not an edible — if large pieces break off, throw them out.

Rubber chews (softer on teeth)

KONG Extreme (Large)

Also covered in the toys guide, but it earns a place here as a stuffable chew. Freezing a stuffed Extreme turns a 5-minute snack into a long project. Prefer Extreme (black) over Classic (red) for Lab jaws.

West Paw Zogoflex Hurley (Large)

Flexible enough that many Labs pass the thumbnail test. Floats for dock and lake days. West Paw’s one-time replacement guarantee (per West Paw) is useful when a determined Lab finally wins.

Edible chews

Greenies Original Large

Greenies Original appears on the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) accepted list for plaque and tartar control when used as directed. Large is for dogs about 50–100 lb. Give as an occasional or daily treat — not a free-for-all — and adjust dinner calories.

Himalayan yak cheese chew (Extra Large)

Hard dried-milk chews last a long time. Pick Extra Large for Labs. Supervise: when the piece is small enough to swallow whole, take it away (or microwave the stub into a puff per the maker’s instructions). Too-hard yak chews can still fail the thumbnail test for some dogs — check before you leave the room.

Thick bully sticks (12”)

Single-ingredient beef chews. Choose thick 12-inch sticks and use a holder, or remove the last few inches so your Lab cannot gulp the end. Calorie-dense: one stick can replace a meal’s worth of treats. We link a search rather than a single ASIN because brands and thicknesses vary.

What we skip (and why)

  • Cooked bones and antlers that fail the thumbnail test — tooth-fracture and splinter risk (AAHA, PetMD).
  • Most rawhide — obstruction risk for gulpers (AKC).
  • Weight-inappropriate “puppy” chews — too small for adult Lab jaws.

Pair chews with the rest of Lab care

Chewing is enrichment, not a substitute for exercise or training. Puppies need softer options and shorter sessions — see the puppy checklist and puppy training plan. If your Lab already has dental disease or a fractured tooth, ask your vet before offering hard nylon.

Frequently asked questions

Are cooked bones safe for Labs?

No. Cooking makes bones brittle so they splinter. PetMD and other veterinary sources warn of choking, tooth fractures and gut perforation. Skip cooked bones entirely.

What is the thumbnail test for dog chews?

Press your thumbnail into the chew. If you cannot leave an indentation, AAHA says it is too hard and can break teeth. Prefer chews that bend slightly.

How often can I give Greenies?

Follow the package for your Lab's weight. Greenies Original is on the VOHC accepted list for plaque and tartar when used as directed. Count the calories in the daily food budget.
