Where did Labrador Retrievers come from?
Short answer
Labradors descend from St. John's water dogs of Newfoundland, which fishermen used to retrieve nets and fish. British breeders developed the modern breed in the 1800s, and the AKC recognized the Labrador Retriever in 1917. Chocolate was present early but became popular much later.
